Statement of Purpose
What is the authentic and what isn’t. What is acceptable and what isn’t.
The question of what is acceptable is the basis to the whole issue. But to best understand the answer, we must examine what it is we’re trying to do as Civil War reenactors.
In the 10th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry our stated purpose in our guidelines is to perpetrate public awareness of, and stimulate interest in, the historical significance of the period in Unites States history termed “The War Between The States” and commonly referred to as “The American Civil War”. We achieve this by portraying the appearance, lingo, and actions of Civil War soldiers.
The goal of this organization, 10th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry is to most accurately portray the Western Federal soldiers. To do honor to the efforts of our ancestors and their role in the War Between the States, we must act, look, and behave in a manner which was common to their time period.
To attain this, we must set our sights, expectations, and goals higher than is normally perceived today.
We will bring together like minded re-enactors who want their experiences in this field to be the most authentic and accurate as possible. In order to achieve this, there will be higher standards of guidelines in the 10th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry which must be met and followed by all participants.
Guidelines for the company structure will be in compliance with the “U.S. Army Regulations, 1861.” To best portray the Western Federal soldier we need to concentrate on participating in Western Theatre events.
Communications
Timely and thorough communications is another cornerstone of strength for the 10th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry The primary form of communications will be hard copy via the Postal Service.
Guidelines for any event will be clearly defined in advance, so individuals will be aware of what to expect and what is to be expected.
Information of upcoming events will include the unit designation to be portrayed, respective uniform, impression requirements, and a history of the unit to be portrayed. Other helpful information to better understand the Western soldier will be forthcoming.
Code of Conduct
The 10th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry authenticity standards will be far stricter than the “mainstream” impression. Units of individuals need to be squared away, or at least actively attempting to do so.
By using the term “squared away”, we are endeavoring to procure required uniforms, clothing, and gear. These are constructed with correct period sewing techniques with the correct type of cloth and material.
Tents to be used will vary according to the time period being portrayed. The preferred tents will be shelter half and/or A-frame tents.
21st Century items are prohibited. I.E. coolers, sleeping bags, camp furniture, lanterns, wristwatches, modern eye glasses, etc.
Individuals who have complaints about the code of conduct of others will bring this to the attention of the Regimental Commander by Chain of Command.
For any individual to participate with the 10th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry they must abide by the guidelines of the 10th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. If an individual refuses to comply with the guidelines, they will be removed from the regiment by orders of the Regimental Officer.
